As a kid, if I came across a yard with a mess of maple trees adorned with white trunks, I would end up feeling sorry for those maples (even though it was simply a childish personification) and also, angry with the people who were responsible for it.

While there are several compelling and justifiable scientific reasons to paint the trunks of trees white, as an arborist might argue, it still feels like an outright dishonor.

Of course, I'm still trying to get over all the indelible blue dots that Asplundh Tree Service painted on many of the trees around our house as a way of identifying which trees needed to be trimmed for the power lines.

And yes, my father painted trees, but certainly not ON them and that always felt like an outright honor.
