Many years ago, I delivered the Martins Ferry Times-Leader newspaper in my hometown (Route: St.C. #6). Sometimes, it was a hassle but mostly it was something I really enjoyed. There was one tiny house on my route that was tucked between the Calvary and the First Presbyterian Churches in St. Clairsville. The house was probably only about 250 square feet but contained the nicest older gentleman you’d ever want to meet: Ben Davis. Ben loved baseball and in the summers, he loved listening to the Pittsburgh Pirates on KDKA-AM as called by Bob “The Gunner” Prince. I got to know Ben pretty well and quite admired him and eventually even took the job of mowing his yard for $10 a cut. I never felt right taking any money from him. It was such a small yard and he felt like a friend, so after a while I just didn't bother to charge him.
I believe he passed away sometime in the early 70’s but still I’ll never forget his wonderful personality and how much he liked the Pirates.
