Looking the other way
Nov. 26th, 2023 12:38 pmSeveral years ago, I met a young Syrian couple who were recent war refugees. I was overwhelmed by their sweetness and grace. We talked about their children – a one and three year old and it felt like a conversation I might have with any family, refugee or not.
The immutable and great suffering of families willing to leave all they have and know is immense. Yet, I feel so small with all that is happening now and with so many people fearful, looking the other way or at least hoping someone else will reach out to help the ones that are in need. There are many ways to help – some small -- some large -- but each important, whereas expecting others to help, arguing safety, comparing suffering or leveling blame does very little.

"Charity and personal force are the only investments worth anything.
No specification is necessary, all that a male or female does, that is vigorous, benevolent, clean, is so much profit to him or her, In the unshakable order of the universe and through the whole scope of it forever.”
~From: “Song of Prudence”, Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman
