Today was unseasonably warm and sunny, so I took pictures around the yard. The first few are from indoors, then the rest are the house yard. (See the savanna.)

Once again, I followed the pattern of waking up too often in the night, and then sleeping later in the morning. So there wasn't time to do much before we hied ourselves off to the cardiac care building to get a re-do of the stress test that failed so dismally last week. Everything went well this time. I cooled my heels in the waiting room, amusing myself by watching the varieties of people. There was another old guy in shorts and sneakers with no socks. Not the same guy as last week, but a different one. There was an older gentleman (well, heck, they were almost all old!) wearing brown corduroy pants and leather walking shoes. He was reading an actual book while he waited--the only one. The man with a TEAM GM jacket (also with some kind of union logo, but I couldn't peer at him enough to determine if it was the Teamsters for sure) was working on a Word Find book, which almost counts as a book because it is printed material and does contain words, though not in a linear order. Anyway, this week the technetium went down a treat and the pictures were taken, the Sparrowhawk received a slightly less stale package of ritual cheese crackers, and we were allowed to go home. The scans showed up on his portal a bit later in the afternoon, and as far as we lay people could see, there was nothing at all concerning about them. Of course we have to wait for the doctor to give his opinion, which he probably won't until Monday, but so far, it looks good. As the Sparrowhawk said, "Good job, you little ticker!"

When I turned on the news while making dinner, we saw that there was a tornado south of here. There had been a thunderstorm with torrential rain while I was in the waiting room. Probably the weather will be better tomorrow, but I'm already feeling good about not driving to a funeral in the morning. Strawberry Star is going, and she says they will leave at 7 am. I admire her, but no thank you.

We eat rice almost every night, so I buy it in 20-pound bags--Goya medium-grain rice. For us, it's pretty much as good as Japanese short-grain rice and less expensive. (Sometimes we have different rice--basmati or jasmine or wild rice, or any style of brown rice, but generally it's white Goya medium-grain rice.)

I like the look of the bags, and I thought it would be fun to use an empty bag as a bag ... and finally I got round to making one:

Here's the front, with a fold-over flap

And here's the back

Might take it grocery shopping with me next time I go!

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What is a craft that you tried but abandoned?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Doomed
Isn’t something all the sweeter, the more tantalizing and painful, when we know it’s never meant to last?

Love is the same. Its beauty is because it’s finite by human nature, not despite that.

We can never last. We can never love each other in the exact same way as we did yesterday. Yesterday is gone.

We can’t hold it in our arms again. Soon, all we’ll have of that time is memory.

Let’s make our bonds worth remembering.

how to play
  • For those of us who crave playing out the end of a relationship, no matter how bad or bloody.
  • Give comments.
  • Get comments.

Neighbors Meme

You're just going about your day and you hear a knock at the door.

  1. Anybody can be neighbors here!

  2. Post with your character, canon and any necessary prefs or info

  3. Pick a prompt! Top Level starters encouraged but not required! Alternately, what's your character doing before being interrupted and answering the door? Specify if you're okay with assumed CR (A neighbor you already know!) or not (A neighbor you've just met!)

  4. Players who comment are neighbors dropping in for...some reason or another! Are they expected or not? Need a cup of sugar? Just there to be annoying?

  5. Thread away!

He'd come to us because it was Purim and there were certain things he needed to do but couldn't do for himself because they would constitute work and he knew that Quakers were welcoming to all faiths and would understand and help him out. He'd have gone to a rabbi only he couldn't locate one in Eastbourne.

Heretofore I've only known liberal Jews. We had a long conversation.

He's a Zionist but not a Nationalist. If the Nationalists hadn't hijacked the state of Israel, he says, the Jews and the Palestinians would live in peace. He has served in the IDF and loves Israel but his heritage and sensibility are European (specifically German) and he finds Israelis "loud". He detests Netanyahu and thinks the current war is being waged- like the string of ones before it- simply because the constitution says a wartime Prime Minister can't be prosecuted for his (alleged) crimes.  He lives in Manchester, supports Liverpool and is gay.....

Like everyone else who's not directly involved in the cockpit of the Middle East I've been tempted to simplify the issues. I reckon I know better than to do that now.....

I'm back to looking at backup tools for linux, and massively unimpressed with the documentation of several that are reputed to be good.

Here's my use case:

- I have a fresh minty external drive, currently in an unopened box
- I wish to use it to backup my linux system.

(Implicit) Instructions for MacOS TimeMachine

- unpack, attach cables, plug in to comp following manufacturer's directions
- tell the system you want to use the new desk (nicely identified by name) for Time machine
(I forget this was via a pop-up when the system saw the disk, or via the File Manager GUI)
- tell Time machine you *really* don't have any data you care about on the disk; it's free to format it any way it likes.

Instructions for Borg Backup and Restic
- unpack, attach cables, plug in to comp following manufacturer's directions
- figure out how to format it, whether and how to partition it, etc.; put a file system on it, and mount it, and do so. Guess which file system type would be best. Guess whether there's any reason to use multiple partitions.
- now you can start using the documentation's quickstart guide.

This was fine back when most people installed their own linux systems, and the installation involved deciding how to format and partition your disks, and which file system type(s) to use.

But that hasn't been true for most linux users for the past decade or more.
(1) Plenty of folks happily buy pre-installed linux systems
(2) Those who don't find that the installation process gives them a single bootable partition, with a single file system, using the file system of its choice. Maybe it asks user input if it sees multiple disks/ssds, and it does ask for confirmation when installing to a disk that already has a file system.

Thursday recs time!

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

Feeling tired and with only a few odds and ends in my bag of coping strategies. I was awake too much in the night, and thus slept later in the morning, and forgot to hustle, so I didn't carry out my plan of grocery shopping in the a.m. We had a nice zoom with Deb and the Prussian. Nobody is having any emergencies at the moment. I fixed up a birthday card for the Philosopher. It was a pop-up card featuring jars of fireflies. I had a funny feeling as I looked at it. Some buried memory stirred within me, and I thought "Once upon a time, there was a time called summer. The evenings were warm and long. There were green leaves on the trees. Fireflies rose from the grass. They say this time will come again . . . but when it comes, will it find faith on the earth?" I wished the Philosopher many happy summer memories to come, so it must happen.

I dashed out to the store just before supper, because there was (almost) literally nothing to eat. There always is SOMETHING to eat around here, but there wasn't anything convenient or anything that fit my secret plan, which I usually have in the back of my mind. I brought home a cooked chicken and some potato salad and mac and cheese for the Sparrowhawk, from the deli. Also some KozyShack rice pudding, which really has a pretty decent roster of ingredients, not too much weird stuff, and which the Sparrowhawk likes. And a bunch of bananas. They have calories and go well with rice pudding. I'm still working on improving his nourishment.

We have declined an invitation to attend a funeral this weekend. It was going to be held at 10 am, in a place that is 2+ hours away. You do the math. We just can't get up that early any more. I could do the driving, but it would still upset the Sparrowhawk's schedule too much. He sent the friend who invited us (it's the friend's dad who is getting the send-off) a note explaining this, and I'm sure he understands, but it is saddening nonetheless. Deb was remembering how her mother, a formidable person in her prime, got older and stopped going places at night, and how Deb felt indignant. I remember when my own father quit going to funerals and things, and I too was indignant. "Oh for Pete's sake--pull yourself together!" Now, alas, I understand. There's a difference between grandly deciding that you WON'T do something, and realizing that maybe you just CAN'T. But, intimations of mortality or not, I know I'm going to feel sneakily victorious on Saturday night when I'm at home in my own bed. . . .

I spent the day, or most of it, in sweaty domesticity, which is not how I prefer to spend my days. But it was raining and cleanliness helps the megrims, so I doped my back up and took the couch apart so as to add some more cushions as I've been meaning to for a while. Am still not able to get up out of it without them. But of course this involved vacuuming everything, all sides, including the amazing amount of dust on the nether side of the cushions and the amazing amount of crap between them. Then got at the corner by the wall which was festooned with cobwebs and thick with dust because it's very hard to reach. Emptied cannister, drank 500 ml of water, then vacuumed the rest of the living room and the hallway. Some day I may get the carpet up and the couch pulled out to remove the dust elephants there, but that's a bit more than I'm up for just now. Lemon polished the wooden tables instead so they glow.

Am not totally satisfied because there's still too many miscellaneous boxes and bags here. A bag of unwearable back braces that still don't fit, the plastic hooked hanging thingies I use for laundry between the furnace turning off and the cherries falling, and a pile of calendars I can't throw out because they're where I tracked my weight gains and losses. Maybe if I noted the general trends in a notebook somehow? This would be easier if I had a computer of some description.

Currently have some basmati rice cooking so I can have omuraisu tomorrow. And maybe tomorrow will get to the kitchen floor.

I can't explain this aesthetic

for disciples who love their messiahs too much;

Prophets. Kings and queens. Saviors of the world. Superheroes. Revolutionaries. Magical girls with enough kindness in their hearts for everything in their outstretched arms - and the very universe itself. There are some people that are more than people; they are pure light, forces of nature with a cause and a higher calling singing in their bones. That whisper may not be of their own choosing, but something they answer and they will not turn away.

Yet they must turn away from someone so they may face that abyss.

There will be those that follow, those that align themselves with the person who symbolizes their belief. They see the change, the shift in the tide of nature that swirls around this person. Still, there is always one disciple above all who will do anything...not always for the cause, for the person behind it. To them, that pinpoint of light and inspiration in human form is the name of God on their heart. It's an earthly love. This makes it no less worthy. But:

The path rarely ends will for prophets, royalty, dragon slayers, or girls in pretty sailor suits. Though change is a constant, there are parts of the grand design that will leave those who bring it bloodied and broken on the ground. And even for those messiahs who survive (and they rarely ever do, for others must tell their tales), there is no "end." There is only duty, and the duty cannot be found in another.

( for there is nothing crueler than loving and being loved by a prophet )

HOW TO PLAY
♠ This is the ultimate in forbidden attraction memes, for those who love those who should be beyond love.
♣ Comment with your character and preferences. You may also want to note if your character is more likely to be a "prophet" or a "disciple," though most could be both. Given how canons are, though, a lot will probably be the former.
♥ Comment to others. Please respect preferences, as there may be some possibilities for smut.
♦ Meme inspired by the tumblr page of okayophelia, especially their "they blink and reality shivers," "disciples who love their messiahs too much," and "nothing crueler than loving and being loved by a prophet" tags.

not a restful day

I ended up drinking whisky after work every day this week. They were stressful days. That was fine.

Today, I went to my morning patrol. I came home with a slight headache. I thought maybe I'd just rest all day. Wrong.

Overhead surveillance has been so frequent all day long that it's just absurd. I was gritting my teeth and wondering how guerillas get access to anti-aircraft missiles. I'm not sure if there were multiple aircraft. I thought more than once that there was a plane rather than helicopter. Some special flights get to block their transponder from public review, and last week I watched a plane overhead that wasn't showing on FlightRadar24.com. For today, you can view the flight map for N119SP starting about 1pm Central and about 3pm Central. Apparently it takes about 20 minutes to refuel the helicopter. That's my house under the main tangled knot of each 2-hour flight.

I filed a noise complaint using this form:
https://metroairports.org/file-noise-complaint

Edit 8:50pm. Yes, here's a small plane flying overhead right now. *sigh*
