Forever Returning

It is the time of year around here when the daffodils bloom in places where houses once stood.

Piedmont Lake was created as a flood-control lake in the thirties and the surface mining in Egypt Valley reshaped much of the land in the seventies. There are many areas where there only fragments of roads and properties that once existed. Occasionally you'll see a set of steps that once led to a front door or find a pair of overgrown spruce trees that seem out of place.

My great grandparents lived here in Egypt Valley. The family farm houses and foundations are all gone. Still, I like to imagine that the forever returning spring yellow might somehow be connected to them and all that we once were.
