In the days before landfills, my dad and I used to go to the open-dump about once every two weeks. At the dump, we would find things like old telephones, lawnmowers, appliances, engines and motors. I don't think either of us could resist bringing some of this booty back to the workshop just to tinker around.
Sometimes we would disassemble things just to see how they were built and other times we would repair the stuff - just for fun.
What I learned was a greater confidence in understanding design and a measure of insight in understanding what sacrifices and compromises are made in execution. I guess it would be easy to be critical and point to all the potential failures caused by any flaw, but without a tolerance for imperfection...human, otherwise, or kitty swift.
